The core for the setting up of the Library of Folklore and Social Anthropology was the library of Nikolaos G. Politis. The Library was later enriched with purchases of books and donations, and presently it is one of the best and most complete specialized libraries in Greece. More specifically, the encyclopedic dictionaries of the Library on folklore, anthropology and sociology provide exceptional reference material to those who wish to conduct in-depth research in the field.

The Library has a quite rich series of leaflets and press-clippings referring to folklore issues; the material is thematically classified. In 1987, the late professor of Folk Studies, Maria-Alki Kyriakidou-Nestoros donated a large part of her father’s library, Stilpon P. Kyriakidis, who was the first Professor of Folk Studies at the University of Thessaloniki.

The Library material, in particular new editions, is available for loan. The material non available for loan includes the following: rare books, the books donated by Nikolaos Politis, Stilpon Kyriakidis, as well as reference publications (encyclopaedias, dictionaries, periodicals etc); this material can be studied only in the reading room of the Library.

The holders of a library card, which is valid for the entire AUTh Library System, can borrow the library material. The card is issued by the Thematic Library of the Philosophy Faculty (new wing of the Philosophy Facutly, basement), tel. 99-7306.
