Sir Michael Llewellyn Smith
Michael Llewellyn-Smith obtained a D Phil at St Antony’s College Oxford University for his dissertation on Greece in Asia Minor. In 1973 he published Ionian Vision: Greece in Asia Minor 1919-1922 (2nd revised edition 1998). He joined the British diplomatic service in 1970, and served in Moscow, Paris and Athens as well as at the Foreign Office in London. He ended his career as ambassador in first Poland (1992-96) and then Greece (1996-99). Since retirement he has written and lectured widely on the history and culture of Greece. Besides Ionian Vision referred to above, his publications include Olympics in Athens: The Creation of the Modern Olympic Games; Athens: A Cultural and Literary History; and, as editor, Scholars, Travels, Archives: Greek History and Culture through the British School at Athens. He is a Vice President of the British School at Athens, Visiting Professor at King’s College London, and Hon. Fellow of St Antony’s College Oxford.
