
I was born in Thessaloniki, where I studied Archaeology and Art at the Faculty of Philosophy, Dept. of History and Archaeology. From 1988 to 1991, I pursued postgraduate studies in Paris (Institut d'Art et d'Archéologie, Paris I) and Belgrade (Faculty of Philosophy, Dept. of History and Art) with a scholarship from the Ministry of National Education of Greece. Then (1992-1995), I achieved my doctoral thesis at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris) as a fellow of the Foundation Alexandros Onassis.
I worked in the Ephorate of the Byzantine Antiquities of Mount Athos. I taught at the School of Guides Thessaloniki and as a visiting professor (1998) at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes-Sorbonne. In 2007, I was a regular researcher at the Ecole pratique des hautes études. In 2006, I was the scientific curator of the Exhibition at the new Ecclesiastical Museum of Thessaloniki. I work in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Departement of archaeology, since 1999 as lecturer, assistant professor (2003), associate professor (2009) and professor (2015) of Byzantine art and archaeology.
In 2007 I received a centenary scholarship from the British School of Athens for research in the museums of UK. Since 2008, I am a member of the International Scientific Committee of the Central Ivan Dujcev (Sofia). In 2012, I was a DAAD fellow for research in Münich and Friburg. The same year I was also elected Directeur d'Études associé at the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (Paris).
I am also member of the scientific committee of the international journals Iconographica (ed. Sismel- Florence), Series Byzantina (Warsaw, Poland), Anastasis Research in Medieval Culture and Art (Centrul de cercetare a artei medievale, ed. Artes, Romania), Byzantina (Center of Byzantine Researches, Thessaloniki) as well as the local journal Meletimata Imathias (Veria).
Since 2011 I participate in the international research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust in London, titled: Damned in Hell in the Frescoes of Venetian-dominated Crete (13th-17th centuries). (http://www.auth.gr/news/anouncements/13671)
