The nucleus for the formation of the library of Folklore and Social Anthropology was the library of Nikolaos G. Politis. The library of the School has been enriched in the meantime through purchases and donations and is today one of the best and most complete specialized libraries in Greece. In particular, the library’s folklore, anthropological and sociological encyclopaedic dictionaries are an excellent aid to those who wish to engage in serious research. The holders of a library card, which is valid in the entire Library System of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and is issued by the Thematic Library of the Faculty of Philosophy (new wing of the Faculty of Philosophy, basement), tel. 99.7306. The collection covers the following subject areas:
Ethnology
Social Anthropology
History of religions
Social history
Greek and Foreign Folklore
In the Library there is also a quite rich series of pamphlets and newspaper clippings that refer to issues of folklore interest. This material is arranged thematically. In 1987, the late Professor of Folklore Maria-Alki Kyriakidou-Nestoros donated a large part of the library of her father Stilponos P. Kyriakidis, who was the first Professor of Folklore at the University of Thessaloniki. The material of the library, especially the newer publications, are available for loan: except for rare books, books donated by Nikolaos Politis, Stilponos Kyriakidis, as well as publications of informative content (encyclopaedias, dictionaries, periodicals, etc.): all these “closed” publications can only be studied in the library.
