The Historical Archive was established in the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Thessaloniki by Presidential Decree of May 16, 1927 (Government Gazette 98/26-5-1927) and operated, a few decades later, under the supervision of the professor of Modern Greek History, Apostolos Bakalopoulos. Since then, professors from the Department of Modern and Contemporary History, Folklore and Social Anthropology have been responsible for its operation.
The Historical Archive is housed in a special room of the Library of Modern and Contemporary History, on the 4th floor of the new building of the Faculty of Philosophy (no. 401). Its collections were acquired either through donations or purchases and include original documents, photocopies of documents or manuscripts, diaries, photographs, newspapers, notebooks, historical maps and other miscellaneous materials.
Access to the collections of the Historical Archive is open to researchers. The possibility of reproducing the material depends on the type, age and physical condition of each item and can be done in consultation with the person in charge of the Archive.
